PHYS0040-1

Irreversible Thermodynamics

Duration :30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
4th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in physics3
3rd year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in physics for "licenciés" in physical sciences3
2nd "licence" in physical sciences
Holder(s) :Pierre Dauby
Course contents : Classical (Onsager-Prigogine) Irreversible Thermodynamics. Coupling of the thermodynamical fluxes and forces
  • Direct effects : viscosity, Fourier's, Fick's, Ohm's laws
  • Crossed effects: thermodiffusion, thermoelectricity

Self-organization far from equilibrium
  • Notion of stability of a flow, transitions in fluids
  • Thermoconvective instability (Rayleigh-Bénard-Marangoni instability), linear and non linear approaches, self-organization in fluids, competition between different geometrical patterns
  • Genericity of self-organization phenomena
  • Reaction-diffusion equations : application in chemistry (Belousov-Zhabotinsky), Turing instability, morphogenesis
Course objective : Study of Classical Irreversible Thermodynamics as developped by Onsager and Prigogine. Analysis of some systems showing self-organization far from equilibrium.
