| Course contents :
| The course will present the following topics through the various issues dealt with in this module: embryonary development of the hearts and blood vessels, anatomy of the heart and of its envelopes, anatomy of the respiratory system, cardiac innervation, physiology and biochemistry of the cardiac muscle and vessels. The study of the anatomy of the heart and of the main vessels is essential in semiology, for the interpretation of radiological tests, and in everyday medical practice. The histological structure of the various elements of the cardiovascular system is also examined and completed by the study of the structure-function relationship. General pathological issues and the main physiopathological mechanisms in relation with the cardiovascular system are also examined. | |
| | | |
| Course objective :
| The six topics of this module are based on various learning objectives such as:
1) Knowledge of heart's position, as well as the structure and function of its walls, of the large vessels' cavities and of the cardiac valvules, and cardiac irrigation. 2) Knowledge of the structural characteristics of the cardiac muscle and of the vessels. 3) Knowledge of the physiology of the cardiac muscles contraction and the phases of the cardiac revolution. 4) Knowledge of the factors which determine the cardiac output and the factors which regulate it 5) Knowledge of the interactions between the cardiac and the respiratory functions. 6) Knowledge of the cardiac frequency regulatory mechanisms. 7) Knowledge of the fluid mechanics principles which allow to understand the flow of blood in the vessels. 8) Knowledge of the structure and function of the various types of blood vessels 9) Knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms of the vascular tone. 10) Definition of arterial pressure and knowledge of the influencing factors. 11) Knowledge of the arterial pressure control mechanisms. 12) Understanding the interactions between the hormonal and nervous cardiovascular control mechanisms. 13) Understanding the specifics of the fetal cardio-circulatory system and the post-partum changes. 14) Understanding some of the exploration methods of the circulatory system. 15) Knowledge of some medical terms associated with the principal pathological syndromes. 16) Knowledge of physiopathological aspects such as states of shock.

| Workshops :
| Anatomy
- During the semester 4, there will be demonstrations on anatomical items, then on cadavers and finally dissections carried out by the students in workgroups. The dissection room is located on the ground floor at the Institut d'Anatomie, rue de Pitteurs, 20, 4020 Liège. Materials: dissection kit, lab coat.
Histology
- 5 serial microscopy sessions during semester 4 - location: Institut d'Anatomie - 2nd floor - grande salle de TP - Moreover, students can use the REVISIONS LIBRES (free revisions) systems which give access (in the same conditions as during semester 3) to commented slides, cross-sections, and reference materials.
Physiology
- Schedule : see Semester 4 schedule - Location: Tour 3, level -1
