MECA0105-1

Combustion in Rocket Engines

Duration :15h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
5th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in electromechanics (aerospace)3
Holder(s) :Philippe Ngendakumana
Course contents : The course is subdivided into 4 chapters: thermochemistry of rocket engines and influence of the combustion on the thrust, solid-propellant rocket engines, liquid-propellant rocket engines and combined propulsion (air cycles).
Course objective : The aim of this course is to provide the students with the basis for design and rating a chemical rocket engine.
Prerequisites : Course MECA007-0 "Emploi des combustibles"
Course MECA002-0 "Thermodynamique appliquée et introduction aux machines thermiques"
Workshops : In order to illustrate the different concepts, practical exercises are solved progressively with the students.
Organization : The course consists in an oral presentation illustrated by practical examples. It is given during the second semester (dates to be discussed with the students who choose the course).
Written notes : Extracted from:
- G. P. Sutton, Rocket Propulsion Elements : an introduction to the engineering of rockets, John Wiley & Sons, 1986
- M. Barrère et al., La propulsion par fusées, Science et Lettres, S.A., 1957

- R. Turns, An introduction to combustion, Mc Graw-Hill, 1996
Assessment : A personal home work is asked on a topic chosen in a list. Beside a written report, that work has also to be presented orally. The assessment consists just in that home work.
