Course contents : This lecture is devoted to the energy management in road and railway vehicles, to their propulsion systems (combustion engines, electric and hybrid systems, fuel cell systems), to air conditionning and thermal management of the vehicle. The environment impact receive a careful attention: emissions, fuel consumption, vibration and nuisances, recycling, etc.

  • Introduction to world energy and emission problems and their impact on vehicle propulsion systems
  • Power and torque requirements for propulsion systems. Performance criteria.
  • Normalized measurements of fuel and energy consumptions and emissions.
  • Electric Propulsion systems. Road and railway electric vehicles.
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
  • Fuel cells and vehicular applications
  • Projet
This lecture is illustrated with the Shell Eco Marathon of the University of Liège.

The exact content will be discussed individually with regards of personnal background and objectives.
Course objective : Introduction to 1/ the global problem of energy management in vehicules and transportation systems and to 2/ environmental considerations in propulsion systems.

Organization : This lecture will be given at second quater (February to May). It includes theoretical presentations a laboratory and computer works. There is a personnal project.

Exam in June
Written notes : Copy of slides and reference papers
Assessment : Evaluation is based

  • An oral examen on the theory (books are opened)
  • A personnal work (project) and its oral presentation.
