MECA0032-1

Flow in Turbomachines

Duration :30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
5th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in electromechanics (aerospace)5
Holder(s) :Olivier Léonard
Course contents :
  • Derivation of the equations, basic principles.
  • Quasi-3D approach, absolute and relative frames of reference, potential flows, cascade flows.
  • Cascade flows: mass, momentum and energy balances, correlations for compressors and turbines, resolution of the Euler equations using finite volumes.
  • Meridonal flows: design procedure and analysis procedure.
Course objective : To understand the physics of the flow in turbomachines.
To understand the methods used for aerodynamic design of turbomachines.
Prerequisites : Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics.
Workshops : Projects are organized which consist in designing a compressor or turbine stage and analysing its performance, using MATLAB or FORTRAN programming.
Organization : 8 sessions of 4 hours each are organized during the first part of the academic year.
Written notes : Course notes are available, as well as a collection of solved exercises. These notes are regularly updated and are distributed during the course.
Assessment : The examination consits in presenting the results of the project.
