| Course contents :
| Introduction to Dynamical Problems Encountered in Mechanics of Articulated Systems and Flexible Structures. Lagrangian and Newtonian Dynamics. Application to Simple Systems (e.g. Piston and Crank Mechanism). Single and Multiple Degrees-of-Freedom Systems : Fundamental Properties (Resonance Frequency and Mode-Shape), Calculation of their Response to an Excitation. Continuous Systems and Discretisation Methods. Dynamical Behavior of Rotating Machines: Critical Speeds, Balancing Methods. Practical Works: Exercises, Introduction to Experimental Vibrations Methods. | |
| | | |
| Course objective :
| The objectives are to give an introduction to the modelling and the simulation of the dynamical behavior of mechanical structures and to study typical vibration problems encountered in mechanical structures and rotating machines. | |
| | | |
| Workshops :
| The practical works consists in: 1. many sessions of directed exercises; 2. a numerical homework related to a design problem of a multiple degrees-of-freedom system; this work has to be accomplished individually and is subject to an evaluation; 3. three laboratory sessions, which aim at initiating the student to experimental techniques in vibration mechanics.
- Frequency Fesponse Function of a 1 DOF damped system ;
- Balancing of a Rigid Rotor ;
- Principe of the Dynamical Absorber.
A laboratory report is due within the three weeks following each session. The laboratory sessions are compulsory.

| Assessment :
| A written and an oral examination are organised in June and in September.
A. WRITTEN EXAMINATION
The written examination is divided into two parts. The first part consists in answering to a multiple-choice questionnaire. The second part consists in solving exercices similar to those given during the year. For the second part of the examination, it is allowed to consult the book of theory only.
B. ORAL EXAMINATION
The oral examination consist in: 1. answering to one question of theory drawn from a list of questions. 2. giving some brief definitions.
