Course contents :
  • Consolidation of basic Dutch grammar: theoretical synthesis and exercises for the most part corrected in class.
  • Writing and speaking activities based on texts and documents of general interest + basic vocabulary.
  • Listening comprehension exercises (15h - 1h every week during the second part of the year) for "Baccalaureat Sciences Economiques et de Gestion" students.
Course objective : Consolidation of the basic skills for the four general language skills, namely speaking, listening, reading and writing. By the end of the year, the student must have a good grounding in everyday Dutch (grammar and vocabulary), and must hand in a press article from the authentic Dutch or Flemish press (1 page at least) , that will be discussed on the oral examination.
Prerequisites : Elementary knowledge of the spoken and written language is required. This course is not intended for beginners, as it is the logical continuation of secondary school. However, a course for beginners is organized for students who don't have the level required.
Organization : 2h. every week for all students and in small groups of max. 25 students.

For "Baccalaureat de Gestion" students additional listening comprehension sessions are organized (1h/week) during the second part of the year.

All the students are required to read the texts and prepare the exercises every week. Regular attendance and active participation are essential.

The coursebook includes an Essential Grammar, grammar exercises, the texts and documents that will be used for writing and and speaking activities, and finally vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises (with key).
Assessment :
  • Written examination: mainly based on basic grammar and vocabulary plus the vocabulary introduced in class.
  • Oral examination: based on the topics discussed in class. Moreover, each student must present an article of his choice (min. 1 page).
  • During the year (generally in December), a test is organized. The result will be included in the final mark.
