Introduction to Medical Computing

Course contents : Definitions of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Evolution of hardware, computer systems (hardware) and operating systems (software). Binary coding of information (numbers, characters, texts, images and sound). Boolean algebra and fuzzy logic, computer languages, structured programming, expert systems, databases and freeware. Computer networks and the Internet (history, components and functioning). Typical applications of informatics in Medicine (patient electronic record, healthcare systems, telemedicine, medical informatics teaching). The course will expand over 5 weeks.
Course objective : To make students comfortable with computer technology (hardware, software and the Internet) by introducing basic concepts and the logic used in computing. Students should be awre of the considerable impact of ICT in Medicine and Public Health.
Prerequisites : None
Workshops : There will be one practical sessions to be organised with the students. Other sessions are possible on demand if necessary.
Organization : The course will be tought by Mr Michel Bartholomé, engineer specialised in ICT. For the timetable, students should consult the web site of the Department of Public Health.
