Computer Science applied to Archeology and Art History, including practical exercises

Course contents : After a general introduction to computer science (hardware and software), we successively examine office applications (word processing, DTP, spreadsheets), databases (including relational), graphic programs (including CAD techniques), edition and use of digital images, online applications.
Course objective : The aim of the course is to introduce students to the computer applications used in the two disciplines, with the ultimate goal to use these applications during upper-level coursework. The course is composed of several theoretical classes, each followed by a practical session on the computer.
Prerequisites : None.
Organization : Duration and period: 30 hours (1sr quarter).

Classroom and schedule: Auditorium A4/S/50 (building A4), Wednesday, 2-4 pm.
Written notes : A specific bibliography is recommended during the first class.
Assessment : At the end of the first quarter, multiple-choice exam for the theoretical component and a practical exam on computer which allow an evaluation of the progress accomplished in the use of computer software.

Remarks : Methods of teaching and training: Presentation accompanied by onscreen demonstration. A syllabus is distributed at the beginning of the year. Practical sessions on computer are scheduled following each series of theoretical classes.
