Course contents : First part: Network management
  • Monitoring and control
  • SNMP protocol
  • ASN.1 notation
  • SMI and MIB concepts
  • Remote monitoring agent RMON

Second part: Network security
  • Basic principles of security protocols
  • Access control (Firewall)
  • Security in the network layer (IPSEC), the transport layer (SSL) and the application layer (PGP, secure DNS)
  • Virtual Private Networks - VPN (seminar by Eric Vyncke, CISCO Systems)
  • EAI - Enterprise Application Integration (seminar by Bernard Hauzeur, Art of e.Biz)
Course objective : At the end of the course students will have a basic knowledge of methods and protocols used to manage and secure networks.
Prerequisites : Prerequisites: Introduction to computer networks; Cryptography
Workshops : Two projects: one on network management and one on network secuity.
Organization : First term (roughly from mid-September to end of December), on Fridays from 2PM to 5 PM
Written notes : Reference book: Mainly the slides presented at the lectures and copies of some book chapters.
Assessment : The evaluation is twofold: the two projects and one oral exam. At the oral exam the student has to expose clearly and in a synthetical way one part of the course, and prove his/her in-depth understanding by answering questions.
