| Course objective :
| The immune system has been developped to protect the organism against infectious pathogens. The defense of the organism depends on "innate" mechanisms and "adaptative" mechanisms. The latter are due to cells, which first recognize pathogens and then proliferate, differentiate into effector cells and develop mechanisms in order to kill pathogens; simultaneously, a "memory" is developped which ensures a better response when the organism is reinfected. Perturbations of these systemes, whatever they are genetic or acquired, would permit to the microorganisms to attack the host and to give pathologies. It is thus important to analyze how the immune system works, how the immune responses are controlled to understand the etiology of some diseases. Immunology is a vast and complex domain, always in progress: this lecture is not exhaustive but will allow to understand how an equilibrium between the host and the pathogens is established and how a rupture of this equilibrium is susceptible to induce diseases. | |
