| Course contents :
| During this module, the student will be presented with the following issues: blood cells (red blood cells, platelets) and the enzymatic cascades of the coagulation and fibrinolysis. Pathological biochemistry and physiology are the main semester 4 disciplines to be used in the resolution of these issues. Other involved disciplines are histology, semiology, and anatomy. Resolution of clinical problem is not here an aim in itself, but rather a good way of addressing basic pathological concepts. Details of the diagnostic, nomenclature and treatment will not be studied. As far as immunology and hematology are concerned, these topics will be studied from a more clinical perspective during the 1st doctorat. | |
| | | |
| Course objective :
| This is a list of general objectives to consider during the resolution of these issues: 1) Knowledge of the main mechanisms responsible for the inflammation which sets in because of an infection; 2) Knowledge of the coagulation mechanisms and stages, as well as the natural or therapeutic activation and inhibition mechanisms; 3) Knowledge of the main clinical biology tests used to study the various blood components; 4) Knowledge of blood's respiratory function; 5) Definition of blood-related medical terms; 6) knowledge and definition of the various anemia types; 7) knowledge of the main coagulation disorders
Examples of the various aspects in various disciplines
Physiological and biochemical issues are addressed in this module from the point of view of the coagulation process and its regulation as well as the interactions between coagulation and inflammation. Some aspects regarding the physiopathology of coagulation are also presented. Finally, the stages of the creation of the heme and the hemoglobin synthesis as well as the associated disorders. The topics of the summary courses are the following: - Heme synthesis and hemoglobin generation ; - Hemoglobin generation disorders; - Thrombosis, embolism, and clot; - Veins, arteries and coagulation; - Liver and coagulation; - DIC and heparin; - Platelet aggregation and receptors, synergic effects; - Thrombus and fibrinolysis; - Endothelium and platelets; - Anti- and pro-thrombotic effects of the endothelium; - Prostaglandins and platelets; - The links between coagulation and inflammation.

| Assessment :
| 1st and 2nd session:
- Written exam with 1 open question. 3, open short-answer questions, 40 multiple choice questions with general implicit solutions and certainty levels. - Oral integrative exam (control of competencies). All students undergo an examination by a panel of 5 lecturers. Each panel uses a bank of questions (PBL type). The student selects randomly a question, prepares the answer for 45 minutes and is interrogated for 20 minutes.
