Art history and archaeology of the Roman world

Course contents : ntroduction - Roman art: Royal, Republican and Empire periods (dynasties of the Julio-Claudians, the Flavians, the Antonines, the Severans, Tetrarchy, Constantinian era).
Course objective : The course traces the development of artistic production in Italy from the Etruscan period to the end of the Empire. Emphasis is placed primarily on architecture, sculpture, painting and mosaics, clarifying the broad developmental trends and characteristics specific to each period. The archaeological context of finds is also taken into consideration, in the perspective of a regular updating of the material with recent discoveries.
Prerequisites : None, apart from a basic understanding of the history of Greco-Roman antiquity.
Organization : Duration and period: 30 hours (2nd quarter).

Classroom and schedule: Auditorium "Grand Physique", Monday, 10-12h.
Assessment : Multiple-choice examination in two sessions.

Remarks : Methods of teaching and training: ex cathedra course, with digital images. A syllabus presents a detailed structure of the course and a selection of illustrations (limited to line drawings and thus mainly architectural). Multimedia presentations containing all of the illustrations presented during the course, can be consulted on the computers in the Service. A review session is possible at the end of the year at the request of students.
