| Course objective : | This course addresses artistic and archaeological approaches to the study of past societies. These two frameworks are presented in parallel and combined. It examines complex societies from the Neolithic and Metal Ages, beginning with economic and technological changes (sedentism, origins of agriculture and animal husbandry) that led progressively to modern complex human society. | ||||||||

| Prerequisites : | None, but a minimum of knowledge in the sciences is helpful. | ||||||||

| Organization : | Duration and period: 30h + 30h practical work + 10 days of excursions and fieldwork, 1st and 2nd semesters. Classroom and schedule: Auditorium A4/S100 (building A4), Monday, 12-1 pm. | ||||||||

| Written notes : | Reference book : M. Otte, La protohistoire, Bruxelles : De Boeck, 2001 (with contributions by M. David-Elbiali, C. Eluère and J.-P. Mohen). A bibliography of the major reference works is distributed at the beginning of the year. | ||||||||

| Assessment : | An individual project of research and synthesis is required from each student. This is included in the final grade, which is also based on an oral examination at the end of the year and an evaluation of knowledge acquired during practical exercises. An optional mid-term written multiple-choice exam is given in January. Exam session in June. | ||||||||
