Course contents : Approach (definition and theory) - The Site (formation, nature, alterations) - Preparatory file - Survey - Grid system - Test pits - Excavation techniques - screening - spatial distribution - chronological relations - Photography - Drawings (profiles, plans, treatment of images) and moulds - Sampling (natural and physical sciences, witness profiles) - Preservation - Field notebook - Inventory - Artefact drawing - Publication.
Course objective : This course presents all components of fieldwork, including research structure and practice in the field. Themes developed follow the logical progress of mounting an archaeological expedition and is complemented by development of the theoretical aspects relevant for each step.
Prerequisites : None, but a minimum of knowledge in the sciences is helpful.
Organization : Duration and period: 30h + 5 days of field training (1st and 2nd semesters).

Classroom and schedule: Auditorium A4/S100 (building A4), Monday, 2-3 pm.
Written notes : Reference book : M. Otte, Lire le passé. Méthodes de fouilles archéologiques, Liège: Editions de l'Université de Liège, 2003.

A bibliography of the major reference works is distributed at the beginning of the year.
Assessment : Oral examination at the end of the year. Students are required to participate in 5 days of field training, giving them the occasion to actually practice their future profession. Exam session in June.
