| Course objective :
| The course is an introduction to research in art history and archaeology in Classical Antiquity. After an introduction that exposes the principles and methods of the two disciplines (nature of sources, finding and using sources, in particular problems of dating) and a brief initiation to the bibliography, the main part of the course consists of an examination of the development of artistic productions in Greece and Italy from prehistory to the end of antiquity. A final chapter is reserved to a specifc example taken from the confrontation of archaeological and written sources, in order to emphasise their respective utility and their complementarity. | |

| Duration and period: 30 hours (2nd quarter).
Classroom and schedule: Auditorium S100 in building A4, Tuesday, 4-6 pm. | |

| Written notes :
| As reference works, consultation of the volumes devoted to Greek and Roman art in the series "L'univers des formes" (Paris, Gallimard) is recommended. | |

| Assessment :
| Oral examination at the end of the year. Exam session in June. The exam allows an evaluation of knowledge acquired as well as the ability to synthesize and present the material. | |
