Course contents : The course is a survey of English literature from its Anglo-Saxon origins to the end of the sixteenth century.
Course objective : Show students how and why literary genres and movements appeared and developed in English literature, from its Anglo-Saxon origins to the sixteenth century, in connection with the historical situation (social, economic and philosophical context); encourage them to become familiar with the idiom specific to literary criticism.
Prerequisites : Understand English.
Organization : 30 hours, ie one hour per week in the first and second terms.
Written notes : The course is based on a syllabus which will be sold at the beginning of the year and available on the internet. Recommended further reading: David McDowell, An Illustrated History of Britain (Longman, 1989); Martin Gray, A Dictionary of Literary Terms (York Handbooks, 1992); Robert Barnard, A Short History of English Literature (Blackwell, 1995).
Assessment : Oral examination.
