Groundwater Modelling

Course contents : - general equation of the groundwater flow in porous media in steady state and transient conditions;
- advection, diffusion, dispersion, adsorption/desorption, degradation, immobile water effect, physicochemical reactions;
- equation of the transport processes for solute contaminants, particular cases of very permeable media and low permeability media;
- representation, idealization, and discretization of the porous and fissured media;
- use of the various numerical techniques: advantages/disadvantages for the user, adequacy of the technique, resolution of the transport equations by various digital Eulerian and Eulerian-Lagrangian techniques, problems of numerical instabilities and dispersion;
- development of a conceptual model and discussion of the boundary conditions;
- calibration procedures and sensitivity analysis for local and regional models;
- influence of interactions between parameters, non linearities and coupling;
- study cases;
- applications to actual situations by using various methods of resolution
Course objective : To allow the students to get a thorough knowledge concerning groundwater modelling using different numerical techniques available for problems involving groundwater flows and solute transport.
This knowledge, indeed, is extremely appreciated by decision makers, the administrations, Ministries, water-companies, semi-public and engineering departments related to environment. Predictive calculations related to groundwater are of great importance in, quantitative and qualitative management of the local and regional groundwater resources, in engineering geology problems, for waste disposal impact studies, contaminated sites cleaning, etc.
Prerequisites : It is adviced to have a good background in Hydrogeology.
Workshops : Use of a software running on PC's for resolution of an actual study-case with groundwater flow and solute transport computations in a classical situation of protection zones delineation or impact study of a waste disposal. A short report is expected from each group of 2 students.
Organization : Theory is given during 10 sessions of 1h30 each. Practical exercises are performed in the PC classroom in the B52 (Sart-Tilman). The teaching period is concentrated on the first 5 weeks of the first semester.
Written notes : Notes and/or copy of the transparents are provided at the beginning of the lessons.

Assessment : Oral exam. The result can be influenced by the quality of the report on the practical exercice.

Preparation during 20 minutes (with books and notes) on a given question. Then oral exam (with blackboard), small questions around are possible.
