Duration :15h Th, 15h Pr, 1d FW
Credits/ECTS :
2nd year of a Bachelor's degree in geological sciences3
Holder(s) :Jacqueline Vander Auwera
Course contents : The course includes the following topics: composition and nomenclature of magmatic rocks (Streckeisen, chemical classification of volcanic rocks, CIPW norm); graphical representation of mineral parageneses and reactions; Schreinemakers rules; binary and ternary phase diagrams.
Course objective : The course aims at providing a basic knowledge for critical interpretation of magmatic and metamorphic phase diagrams.
Prerequisites : Reference is being made to the basic principles of chemical thermodynamics and geology (GEOL0202-1).
Workshops : 7 labs of 2H are devoted to the use of the nomenclature of magmatic rocks, to exercises on graphical representation of mineral parageneses and to the critical use of binary and ternary phase diagrams.
Organization : 7 lectures of 2H each followed by 2H of labs.
Written notes : Booklets provided during the lectures
