Duration :25h Th, 25h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
4th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in geology4
Holder(s) :Eric Pirard
Course contents : General overview of the mineral resources sector.
Definitions of ore, resource, reserve (JORC Code).
Mineral production and consumption statistics.

General concepts of metallogeny

Economic Geology of : - deposits related to magmatic activities; - deposits related to hydrothermalism associated to magmas; - hydrothermal deposits related to sedimentary / structural features; - deposits formed in sedimentary/evaporitic environments; - detrital deposits; - deposits formed by superficial weathering; - deposits linked to metasomatism, metamorphism, diagenesis

Industrial minerals (overview and economical importance)
Course objective : 1) To present the regional and local geological context of the main metallic ore deposits.
2) To point out specific exploration criteria for each mineral resource
3) To establish a clear link between the ore deposit type and its mode of excavation
4) To sketch the geopolitical context prevailing for each metalic ore and its strategic importance in the global economy.
5) To explicit the impact of geological and mineralogical characteristics on downstream mineral and environmental processes.
Prerequisites : General geology
Workshops : Macroscopic ore samples
Microscopic examination of polished sections
Commercial documents from major mining companies
Organization : Theoretical courses are given by modules of 2 hours.
Observation of hand specimens and microscopical sections are organised after the theoretical course.
Written notes : A detailed Power Point presentation is available through the student portal (MyULg)
Recommended lectures are :
- Carr & Herz, Concise encyclopedia of Mineral Resources, Pergamon, 1989
- Edwards & Atkinson, Ore Deposit Geology, Chapman & Hall, 1986
Assessment : Oral examination following a 30 minutes written preparation.
