GEOL0016-1

Magmatic and metamorphic petrology (partim 1)

Duration :30h Th, 50h Pr, 5d FW
Credits/ECTS :
1st "licence" geological sciences11
Holder(s) :Jacqueline Vander Auwera
Course contents : The course includes the following topics: silicate melts and volatile fluids; crystal-melt equilibria; chemical dynamics of melts and crystals; magma ascent and emplacement; volcanism; generation and differentiation of magmas; layered intrusions; petrotectonic associations; the controlling factors of metamorphism; metamorphism of pelitic rocks, mafic rocks and calc-silicate rocks; metamorphic textures; migmatites and anatexis.
Course objective : The course provides a broad overview of the study of magmatic and metamorphic rocks with emphasis on controlling petrologic processes.
Prerequisites : Reference is being made to notions of thermodynamics and chemistry as well as to the topics provided in the course on Theoretical petrology and Mineralogy.
Workshops : During the labs, the main categories of magmatic and metamorphic rocks are observed under the polarizing microscope and as whole rock samples. Emphasis is given to nomenclature and textures as well as to the conditions of formation.
Organization : 15 lectures of 2 hours, 12 labs of 4 hours.

A fieldtrip (6 days) is organized in the Massif des Maures (Var, France).
Written notes : Notes are provided during the lectures
