Principles guiding the economic organisation of space

Course contents : The course is dealing with the issue of development and regional planning. It is made of three main parts. The first part is concerned with the issue of development at both, international and regional scales. Concepts and theories are privileged, as well as, on the one hand, the developing countries and, on the other hand, the European Union. The second part is related with the development and the planning at four scales: international, national, regional and Belgian. The specificities of the Walloon context is developed at the end of the course. The third part of the course is related with the 15 hours of the Chaire Sporck dedicated to development and planning issues.
Course objective : With this course, the future geographers will be able to make reference with both, theoretical and practical dimensions of the development issue. The related knowledge have two main objectives: to understand the problems and to intervene within the framework of development and planning.
Prerequisites : BAC and first licence courses of economic geography.
Good basic knowledge of micro and macro-economy.
To be open-minded concerning social and economic problems.
Workshops : Four worshops are proposed :
- review of the scientific litterature
- researches on disparity indicators
- comparative study on development and planning policy
- preparation and exploitation of the Chaire Sporck courses

Assessment : Personal works (joined in a written file and orally presented): 50% of the quotation
Theoretical exam: 50% of the quotation.
