GEOG0602-1

Remote detection, partim: photo-interpretation; partim: satellite remote detection

Duration :30h Th, 40h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
1st "licence" geographical sciences8
1st "licence" in geographical sciences (geomatics and geometrology option)7
Holder(s) :Yves Cornet, André Ozer
Course contents : Partim SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING (20h+25h) - Y. CORNET
The course is subdivided in two parts: theoretical and practical.
The theoretical part is illustrated by many directed works. The practical part consists of an exercise on classification methods (10 hours). The theoretical course and directed works consists in 4 parts : general introduction, concepts of monogenic image processings, polygenic image processings and some complementary methods of image processing.
The general introduction consists of 3 chapters:
1. Satellite description
2. Nature of the signal
3. Concepts of digital image
The part devoted to the monogenic image processings contains 6 chapters:
4. Visualization of monogenic images
5. Contrast enhancement
6. Classifications of one spectral band
7. Focal, zonal and global processings(local)
8. Filtering of the images in the space field
9. Geometrical and radiometric corrections
The third part devoted to polygenic image processings is made up of 5 chapters:
10. Visualization of polygenic images - composites
11. Indices and arithmetic operators
12. Polygenic transformations
13. Images classifications
14. Multi - sources analysis
Lastly, some complementary concepts of image processings are disscussed in a fourth part which contains the 3 following chapters: 15. Low resolution images (the example of AVHRR data)
16. Principles of radar imaging
17. Satellite imagery and modeling
Course objective : Partim SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING (20h+25h) - Y. CORNET
· To understand the acquisition process and the nature of the information of remotely sensed images
· To know the main types of processings applied to these images
· To control the functionalities of image processing by means of typical software tools
Prerequisites : Partim SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING (20h+25h) - Y. CORNET
The course intensely exploits the mono and multivariate statistical treatments studied within the framework of the courses of statistics in 2nd candidature and spatial analysis in 1st licence.
Moreover, it frequently refers to the concepts of numerical analysis, matrix algebra and analytic geometry studied at the mathematics course of 1st candidature.
Some concepts of numeric cartography and software (Idrisi) tools used in 2de candidature (geomatics and geometrology option) are exploited. These notions are recalled for the students of the geography option.
Workshops : Partim SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING - Yves CORNET
The practical part consists of an exercise on classification methods (10 hours).
Organization : Partim SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING (20h+25h) - Y. CORNET
During the year 2003-2004, the lectures will take place in the room 35 of the 2nd floor of the B5 building during the second quadrimester on Tuesday AM and PM and on wednesday PM.
Written notes : SATELLITE Partim TELEDETECTION (20h+25h) - Y. CORNET
The paper support of the course and directed works consists in a collection of numeric PowerPoint slides and Word documents projected during the lectures.
These documents are available in pdf format and downloadable from the FTP server of the Geomatics Unit (ftp://ftp.geo.ulg.ac.be) using the students user-id and the corresponding password.
