Genetics and molecular biology of development

Course contents : This lecture comprises 5 parts
1) Introduction, general considerations,techniques and basal concepts. The aim is to provide a general overview of the course, to define developmental biology, to present a historical perspective of this domain.
The main stages of embryonal development will be presented: fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation (formation of the three germinal layers), organogenesis and regeneration in the adults

2)Embryogenesis in the major animal model systems (Xenopus, zebrafish, chick, mouse and drosophila)

3)Description of the mechanisms involved in gastrulation and the establishment of the three body axis

4) Description of the molecular mechanisms involved in ectoderm formation and remodeling (formation of the cental nervous system)

5) Descrption of the molecular mechanisms involved in endoderm formation and remodeling (e.g. the pancreas)
Course objective : Presentation of the basic principles in animal embryo development (vertebratyes and invertebrates), of the molecular mechanisms involved and the way to study them
Prerequisites : none
Workshops : An in situ hybridization experiment is performed on zebrafish embryos using various probes to visualize specific expression patterns.
Zebrafish embryogenesis will be observed live using a binocular.
Organization : Lecture using a Powerpoint presentation
Written notes : Copies of the Powerpoint presentation will be available (paper or CD)
