Water Resources Management

This class is made of theoretical lectures (ex-cathedra) and practical exercises partially supervised during which an assistant is at the studentsÂ’ disposal to answer their questions. Each exercise leads to the handling in of a report.
This class fit in the continuity of the basic classes of applied hydraulics (free surface flows) by treating subjects more complex and more specialized such as the analysis of the turbulence and of the mathematical models currently available to represent it, sediments transport by the rivers or waves induced by bad working of structures (failure of dams for example), with risk analysis.
These subjects are applied in practical works through the use of the quasi-3D free surface flow solver WOLF2D or the writing of a solver for the computation of bed-load transport. Other aspects of unsteady hydrodynamics are considered by the hydraulic calculation of a network system for locks operation.

Hydraulic Flow Modelling and Lay-Out

Hydrology

Quality control and homogenisation of the hydropluviometric data. Maximisation of the information of flows by probabilistic models. Statistical analysis of annual and monthly discharges. Study of extreme situations during floods and drought periods. Studies of floods by mathematical, deterministic, probabilistic, or conceptual models based on spatial discretion. Reconstitution of complex hydrographs. Predetermination of the exceptional floods in small and large basins..
Course objective :

Hydrology

To develop basic elements in order to learn how to establish correctly a water balance and to evaluate the maximum floods which can occur in a watershed.
Prerequisites :

Hydrology

No specific prerequisite apart from what is normally expected of students in their fourth year at university.
Workshops :

Hydrology

Resolution of particular problems and establishment of a complete water balance of a basin. Four workshops of guided exercises and two personal working sessions are organised.
Organization :

Water Resources Management

1st semester

Hydraulic Flow Modelling and Lay-Out

1er semestre

Hydrology

First term.
Written notes :

Water Resources Management

Comprehensive typing out lecture notes (814 pages) available.

Hydrology

Notes will be handed out to students on our first meeting.
Assessment :

Water Resources Management

Each practical work report provides an individual appreciation. An oral presentation of the practical works and an oral evaluation for the whole lecture are scheduled at the end of the module. The last one is made up of theoretical and application questions.Final mark is obtained by weighted mixing of the partial appreciations.

Hydrology

Oral examination and evaluation of personal practical work.
