Course contents : Steel as construction material - Design principles - Connections - Tensile members - Compression members - Beams - Members subjected to combined compression and bending - Linear theory pof plate buckling - Design of slender plate girders - Statics of cables - Fatigue - Exercices - Seminars -
Fundamentals of composite construction for the building construction - Composite beams - Composite floors - Composite columns.
Course objective : Develop the methods of plastic structural analysis (plastic hinge method).
Provide the basic knowledge for both the design and verification of steel and composite structural elements.
Prerequisites : Fundamentals of statics, Mechanics of solids and materials, Structural analysis, Fundamentals of reinforced concrete
Workshops : Exercises and evaluation.
Organization : Lectures (50 h )and exercises (75 h ) organised as periods of 2 to 4 hours
Written notes : Available
Assessment : Several evaluations (only exercises) during the semester. At the end of the semester, written and oral examinations devoted respectively to practical applications and theoretical aspects.

Remarks : Possible technical visits are addressed to steel fabrication, production of structural steel shapes, steel worshops and construction sites.
