Duration :20h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Master in sciences and management environment2
1st year of Master's degree in sciences and management environment,2
Holder(s) :Monique Carnol
Course contents : 1. Introduction and general concepts
2. Diversity of micro-organisms
3. Methods in environmental microbiology
4. Microbial communities
5. The role of microorganisms in biogeochemical cycles
6. Localisation of microorganisms in the biosphere
7. Examples - case studies

Particular importance is given to the understanding of theoretical concepts and their application to concrete examples. Thus the course progresses from theoretical concepts towards practical examples of the microbial activities in the environment.
Course objective : - Acquire basic knowledge on microbial processes and on the interactions between microorganisms
- Understanding of the functionning of microbial processes in various habitats and of the relationships between environmental factors and microorganisms
- Apply microbial and ecological principals to applied processes
- Realise the complexity and the importance of microbial processes in ecosystems
- Acquisition of sufficient knowledge on the functionning of microorganisms in ecosystems and development of critical thinking to allow students to develop their own scientific opinion on environmental problems.
Prerequisites : Basic/detailed notions in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and ecology are useful, but not absolutely necessary.
Organization : Lectures with 'Power point' presentations
Written notes : Lecture notes and power point illustrations are available. The understanding of concepts is based on the explanations given during the lectures. Additional information can be obtained from reference books available in the laboratory.
Assessment : Written exam (generally in january)
