Course contents :
  • Sampling techniques and checking water quality on a basin scale: choosing measuring stations and parameters, the frequency of sampling on a basin scale.
  • Sampling techniques and storing samples.
  • Strategies for preparing samples.
  • Choosing analysis methods.
  • Laboratory and fieldwork analysis : MES, major elements, nutrients, organic matter.
  • Quality control of analysis results.
  • Interpreting analysis results.
  • Presentation and use of tools to evaluate water chemical quality.
  • Presentation of results provided to decision makers.
  • Instruments and equipment.
  • Fieldwork visits to look at concrete examples of domestic, urban and industrial pollution and areas which have been rehabilitated.
Course objective : To give participants a working methodology appropriate to retrieving, treating and interpreting data in the field of Integrated Management of hydric resources.Practicalaspects are highlighted: visits, laboratory and fieldwork. Another aspect is prevention, conservation and the rehabilitation of aquatic ecosystems.
Prerequisites : Basic biology and chemistry.
Workshops : After a reminder of the necessary theory, the emphasis on this course is placed on practical aspects, notably demonstrations, practical work and case studies (laboratory and field work).

According to the availability of rooms and materials, and the number of students, individual practical can be organised within certain parameters.
Organization :
  • Theory : 24H (8 modules of 3h)
  • Practical Work : 24H (8 modules of 3h)
Written notes : A syllabus highlighting theoretical aspects, a list of useful references and photocopies of presentation sheets used in class will be given to the students.
Assessment : Written Exam (without course material in the exam).
