ENVT0741-1

Methodology of the collection and the environmental data processing,

Duration :21h Th, 3h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
2nd year of Master's degree in sciences and management environment,2
Holder(s) :Jean‑Jacques Boreux
Course contents : This course of statistics applied relates to the risks concerning the decisions as regards management of the environment. It treats quantitative analysis of uncertainties by going up effects (observations) with the causes (parameters). It thus exploits the so-called bayesian statistical approach whose rational principles bring a new and relevant point of view to treat environmental risk management. According to this design, the objective data (observations) are combined with the "subjective" data (formalized representation of the studied phenomenon, expertise and knowledge preconditions) for an update of knowledge. The course offers an introduction to the graphic modelling which supports the multi-field approach and, by-there, the emergence of realistic models. The inherent calculative difficulties in this type of approach are reduced by an initiation to the Monte Carlo Markov Chain. Many real examples illustrate the explanations.
Course objective : The objective of the course is to give to the students very clear ideas on the concept of statistical model parametric and to sharpen its critical direction on the uses which can be made of it, in particular in the environmental risk management.
Prerequisites : The mathematical level required is that of secondary education (e.g. to derive and integrate a single real function). The student is judicious to have followed a very elementary course of theory of probability and statistics. It can use worksheet software (e.g. EXCEL).
Workshops : Under EXCEL, the student infers some models (beta-binomial, gamma-Poisson) and detects a keydate in a time series using a sample iid from a normal law.
Written notes : Available
Assessment : Each student solves a problem (problematic and real data) and writes a report. This one will be present later on at the time of a discussion with the professor.
