ENVT0732-1

Physicochemical and biological features of fresh water

Duration :20h Th, 20h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in sciences and management environment3
1st year of Master's degree in sciences and management environment,3
Holder(s) :Françis Rosillon, Paul Vander Borght
Course contents : List the main parameters that define the physico-chemical and biological (including bacteriological) features of water (surface water, waste water).
Introduce follow-up and sampling strategies to test the quality of water in various fields of enquiry.

I. Physico-chemical quality
- sampling strategies and sample pretreatment
- terrain and laboratory analysis (major elements, nutrients, organic matter, heavy metals
- quality control and interpreting analysis results

II. Biological Quality
- description of indicators of microbiological water quality (viruses, bacteria, parasites)in relation to the microbial ecology of the environments studied
- sampling and analysis strategies, methodology, diagnostic reports
- use and standard norms in relation to water microbiological quality
- microbial risks, hydric diseases and health aspects
- management strategies and techniques with a view to guaranteeing use conformity
- introduction to the evaluation of aquatic environments by biotic indicators
Course objective : To provide participants with a working methodology appropriate to the organisation, treatment and interpretation of water quality data by demonstrating the procedures of developing the data with a view to defining management strategies (practical and theoretical presentations).
Prerequisites : Basic biology and chemistry.
Workshops : After a reminder of the necessary theory, the emphasis on this course is placed on practical aspects, notably demonstrations, practical work and case studies (laboratory and field work).

According to the availability of rooms and materials, and the number of students, individual practical can be organised within certain parameters.
Organization : Theory : 20H

  • Physico-chemical quality : 12H (4 modules of 3H)
  • Biological quality : 8H (4 modules of 2H)
Practical Work : 20H

  • Phsico-chemical quality : 10H
  • Biological quality : 10H
Written notes : A syllabus highlighting theoretical aspects, a list of useful references and photocopies of presentation sheets used in class will be given to the students.
Assessment : Written Exam (without course material in the exam).
