Ecology of the sea

Course contents : After reviewing basic concepts in marine ecology (biomass, production and productivity, nutrient and element cycles, edaphic factors impact on organisms, ...) and briefly describing marine biodiversity, we focus on three main ecosystems (fully described) : Posidonia meadows, coral reefs and abyssal communities (mainly hydrothermal vents).
Course objective : To give stable bases in marine ecology
Prerequisites : Minimal biology knowledge
Workshops : Integrated field work at Stareso oceanographic station (Corsica).
Organization : 6 times 2.5 hours between October and February
Written notes : Powerpoint slideshows distributed on a CD
Assessment : Oral exam with notes
