Electromagnetic propagation

Duration :30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
3rd year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in electricity5,5
4th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in computer sciences5,5
4th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in physics6
Holder(s) :Benoît Vanderheyden
Course contents : Reviews of electrostatics, magnetostatics, Maxwell equations, and wave equation. Wave propagation in a non-conducting medium, in a dissipative medium. Transmission-line theory for a sinusoïdal source and under transients. Wave guides. Antennas and radiation of electromagnetic waves. Topics related to the diffusion of magnetic fields and loss mechanisms in conductive materials (eddy currents and skin effect), as well as polarisation mechanisms are also discussed.
Course objective : The course describes the fundamental physics of electromagnetic radiation, wave free and guided propagation in view of applications in high frequency electronic devices.
Workshops : Exercice session (problem solving with a teaching assistant).
Organization : The lectures and the exercice sessions are scheduled for the second quadrimester.
Written notes : Slides (copies available on the class web page). Textbook: Applied Electromagnetism, Liang Chi Shen and Jin Au Kong (PWS Foundations in engineering series).
Assessment : Exam in two parts: a written exam on problems and an oral exam on theory.
