Duration :15h Th, 15h Ex.
Credits/ECTS :
2nd "licence" in physical education3
Holder(s) :Marc Cloes
Course contents : The course is divided into three main parts:
The firs part (General principles of molecular biology) describes the concepts of gene structure, function and regulation, as well as the mutational instability of the genome.
The second part (Recombinant DNA techniques) presents the main techniques used in molecular biology in order to allow the students to understand how the results are obtained and to prepare them to a career in a research laboratory.
The third part (From molecular biology to medicine) presents same applications of molecular biology techniques, such as in vitro gene transfer, gene therapy, production of recombinant proteins and development of pathology-specific animal models.
Course objective : 1) present the base concepts and challenges in molecular biology;
2) present the main techniques;
3) present gene manipulation and "dissection" ;
4) understand how research results are obtained and how genetic engineering techniques are spreading to all sectors of biomedical sciences;
5) provide the necessary bases for a critical reading of scientific papers.
Prerequisites : Molecular biology (Partim I)
Workshops : Practical exercises sessions.
Written notes : 2 series of course notes.
Assessment : Oral and written exam
