Course contents : General structure of the Belgian health system - Definition of health economy, objectives and specificities - Analysis of the consumption of health resources, including drugs, and its determinants - Different ways to regulate the supply and demand of health resources - Cost of drug misuse and side effects - Methodology of drug utilisation studies, a practical example - Methodology of pharmacoeconomy studies, practical example
Course objective : - Provide students with a rough idea of the Belgian health system structure
- Starting from the specificities of the consumption of health resources, including medicines, to specify the objectives of health economy and pharmacoeconomy
- Critically analyse the mechanisms and parameters influencing the growth of drug expenditures and the different means developed in most countries to contain it.
- Teach the methodology of drug utilisation analysis and of pharmacoeconomy studies

Workshops : None
Organization : 2nd semester, 5 x 2 hours per week
Written notes : Detailed written notes and slides' copy
Assessment : Written test (open questions) followed, if not successful, by oral test
