| Course contents : | Presentation of fundamental aspects of economics and market mechanisms. Behavioural analysis of economic forces, study of consumer expenditures and industrial production. Study of different market types : competition, monopoly, semi-monopoly, oligopoly. - Analysis of the national economy, consumption and savings, investment, taxation and public expenditure. Calculation of National Revenue level and study of budgetary policy instruments. - Analysis of monetary policy, money supply and demand. - Examination of important economic problems : inflation and unemployment. Study of intrenational economic relations. Analysis of protetionism, ree trade. - Examination of international monetary and financial relations. | |||||

| Course objective : | The course aims at presenting the maineconomic concepts, the fundamental mechanisms and the connections between them on the level of both individual agents and national and international economies. Its is neither a description of institutions nor presentation of economic history but essentially lays stress on lines of economic reasoning. It emphasizes the understanding of economic logic and the rational behaviour of the forces in action. No part of the course can be fully inderstood without the help provided by the other parts. Studying this course therefore means a constant effort to bring different economic phenomena inta relationship with one another. | |||||

| Prerequisites : | Nil. Links to other courses. The study of the market behaviour of companies in conditions of competition, monopoly or semi-monopoly forms the economic basis for certain courses in Commercial Law and Economic Law. The analysis of international economic and trade relations is necessary for courses in International Law and European Law. | |||||

| Organization : | Yearly courses. Coaching Throughout the year, the course includes coaching sessions and exercises. Several groups are organised, each under the guidance of a Law student acting as a coach. These sessions use a syllabus containing exercises with open questions, multiple-choice questions, concept definitions, analyses of economic texts (e.g. reports from economic or financial institutions) as well as examination questions from previous years, etc. Active participation in these sessions gives a considerably greater chance of success in the final examination. | |||||

| Written notes : | The lectures are based on 2 syllabi covering the whole course and a syllabus used for the coaching and exercise sessions, all of which are published by the Ulg University press. The content of the course is presented on transparent supports displying all the tables and graphs as well as the general plan for each chapter. | |||||

| Assessment : | The examination is written and composed of about a dozen questions each including several sub-questions that cover the whole content of the course. The examination lasts 3 hours. | |||||
