Course contents : Introduction: why and how a monetary union?
I. Major features of the euroland economy
II. The eurosystem and the European Central Bank
III. Monetary policy: objectives, strategy, instruments
IV. Budget policy and the growth and stability pact
V. International aspects of euro as a currency
Conclusion: Towards a (further) enlargement
Course objective : To introduce the European economic and monetary union, its organisation, its functioning. To analyse the single monetary policy.
Prerequisites : A general course in political economy
Organization : Lectures organised by Prof. Guy Quaden. Students are invited to actively participate.
Written notes : Main reference work: BENASSY-QUERE (A.) et COEURE (B.), Economie de l'Euro, Editions de la Découverte, Paris 2002.

Various documents such as ECB's and National Bank of Belgium's reports, or articles by Prof. Quaden, will be handed out in class.
Assessment : Written examination.
