| Course contents :
| Based on 8 PSL sessions, the module deals with digestive anatomical, histological, embryological, biochemical and physiological aspects. The main digestive functions are presented: deglutition, mobility, defecation and sphincter systems, anatomical binding, stomach, small intestine and colon physiology and biochemistry, vascularization and innervation, endocrine, autocrine and paracrine functions, accessory glands. Students will always have to make the connection between biochemical and physiological functions and anatomical, histological and embryological data. | |
| | | |
| Course objective :
| Systematic Anatomy: - The anatomy of the digestive systems different parts: cervical, supra- and sub-mesocolic thoracic, pelvic and perineal parts.
- The anatomy of abdominal, pelvic and perineal walls.
Topographic Anatomy: Medical practice requires a good anatomic knowledge of the different digestive elements and mutual relationships. Locating, palpating, recognizing elements on X-rays, etc. belong to everyday practice. Students will need to master the following aspects: - topographic anatomy of the oral cavity and the oropharynx and connections with the aerial elements seen in Term 4 (anatomical airway);
- topographic anatomy of the digestive tract (from the oral cavity down to the anus) and analysis of locations, cutaneous projections and respective connections;
- topographic anatomy of peritoneal cavities;
- topographic anatomy of the pancreatico-duodenal region (connections with biliary and vascular elements and the spleen);
- topographic anatomy of the liver and the biliary system;
- topographic anatomy of abdominal vessels;
- cutaneous projection areas of intra-abdominal organs;
- abdominal organs on anatomical sections;
- abdominal elements and constituents (excretory ducts
) on X-rays;
- lymphatic drainage.
Histology: - By the end of Terms 4, 5 and 6, students will know all organs microscopic aspects and the relationships with organic functions. Thanks to practical exercises, they will master the criteria for making differential diagnoses and interpreting microscopic organic sections.
Embryology: Coding genetic material is definitively determined from fertilization. Students will need to understand the different stages of tissue organization and differentiation in embryos and foetuses. Knowing about such successive mechanisms will allow them to understand how malformations appear, which will be detected at birth or at a later stage in pregnancy.

| Prerequisites :
| General Biochemistry, General Physiology, General Histology, General Embryology, Introduction to Human Anatomy | |
| | | |
| Workshops :
| Anatomy
Demonstrations with anatomical parts and corpses, then dissections done by groups of students. The dissection hall is located on the ground floor in the Institute of Anatomy, rue de Pitteurs 20 in Liège. Equipment: dissection kit, apron.
Histology
5 microscopy sessions. The hall is located in the Institute of Anatomy 2nd floor grande salle de TP (great practical hall). Students also have the opportunity of using the VOLUNTARY REVISION system, which allows them to get commented slides, sections and reference books all year round including during exam periods.

| Assessment :
| 1st and 2nd exam periods: - written exam with 1 open question, 5 short open questions, 50 multiple-choice questions with general implicit solutions and certainty indexes - integrative oral exam (skills test). All students are tested by a jury with 5 lecturers. Each jury has a question database (PSL type). Students draw lots for a question, then have 45 minutes for preparation and are tested for 20 minutes. - Multidisciplinary practical exam for Anatomy, Histology and Anatomopathology (same week, group alternation). | |
