 | Structure and conformational dynamics of proteins and nucleic acids

| |
|
| |
| Duration : | 15h Th | |
| | | |
| Credits/ECTS : |
| |
| | | |
| Holder(s) : | Pierre Colson | |
| | | |
| | | |
| Course contents :
| In the first part of the course, the different levels and types of structures of proteins and nucleic acids are detailed as well as the transitions between these structures and the passage from disordered to ordered structures. The structure-sequence relationship is also considered so for proteins as for nucleic acids. Protein folding is also detailed as well as the DNA supercoiling in the cell nucleus. In the second part of the course, the interactions of these macromolecules with solvent (water) and small ligands (ions, drugs, etc..) are theoretically studied and the experimental techniques are reviewed to quantify these interactions. | |
| | | |
| Course objective :
| Increase the qualification of the students concerning the types of structures of biological macromolecules such as nucleic acids and proteins and let them to be aware of the importance of their interactions between each other and with small molecules in molecular biology. | |
| | | |
| Prerequisites :
| General Biochemistry (1st licence in Chemical sciences) | |
| | | |
| Organization :
| According to the number of registered students, this lecture will be given by a classical way (interactive teaching and learning) or as a discussion after reading of part of the lecture (this last situation is optimal with 2 to 4 students only). | |
| | | |
| Written notes :
| Lecture notes are regularly updated. Reference books : Biophysical Chemistry, Cantor and Schimmel Introduction toprotein structure, Branden and Tooze Principles of physical chemistry, Van Holde et al. DNA structure and function, Sinden | |
| | | |
| Assessment :
| Oral examination with a written preparation (eventually discussion about a recent reserach paper in relation with the subjects developed in the lecture). | |
