CHIM0228-1

Physical chemistry: section: recent developments in mass spectometry

Duration :15h Th
Credits/ECTS :
2nd "licence" chemical sciences2
Holder(s) :Edwin De Pauw
Course contents : The course presents the physicochemical bases which underlie the fast developments of the mass spectrometry. Are considered:
- types of spectrometers: sectors, quadrupoles, time of flight, traps - techniques of production of ions starting from solids, liquids, gas - techniques of handling of the ions by MS/MS - techniques of activation of the ions in gas phase - relations of filiation between ions and fragments - the measurement of the high molecular masses - the behavior of the multiply charged ions - mass spectrometry and proteomics-mass spectrometry and metabolomics
The description of recent applications illustrate the physico-chemical aspects.
Course objective : The object of the course is to present the recent developments in mass spectrometry. The technique is indeed in fast evolution and its field of application was widened considerably. It is from now on essential to give to the users the physicochemical basis allowing a optimum use of the method, from the choice of the sample preparation to the data analysis.
Prerequisites : Good starting basis in physics, chemistry and biochemistry
Workshops : Demonstration of different types of mass spectrometers, chromatographic coupling (GC, HPLC) and multidimensional separation methods (GCXGC, 2DHPLC, 2D gels).
Organization : 8 lessons and laboratory demonstrations
Written notes : Reference books and review papers, according to the students's interests
Assessment : Seminar presentation and discussion
