Course contents : Key-concepts of modern physical chemistry are introduced in the frame of various topics oriented towards the applications of physical chemistry in material sciences:
- Electronic and vibrational structure of molecules
- Macromolecular behaviour: from the molecular structure to phase diagrams
- Statistical physics of polymer chains
- Polymer visco-elastic behaviour
- Electronic properties of conjugated polymers
- Intermolecular forces and application to the colloid world
Course objective : At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to apply the basic ideas of physical chemistry to account for the structural and thermodynamical behaviour of matter, in particular, modern materials. Making the link between molecular properties and the macroscopic observations will be an important aspect in their way of thinking.
Prerequisites : The course is based on the basic mathematical, physical and chemical concepts taught during the two first university years.
Workshops : The practical laboratory work takes place during one complete week (40 hours). It is project oriented: each group of two students is in charge of a given project that has to be completed during the week. The steps of this project week are as follows: (i) presentation of the project topics by the staff (ii) short bibliographical search (iii) building-up of the experimental apparatus, (iv) measurements, (v) data handling and analysis, (vi) oral presentation of the results and preparation of a written report. The assessment of the quality of the experimental data (error analysis) by the students is emphasized. The possible project topics are (i) monitoring of a chemical reaction rate using various physical methods, (ii) determination of macromolecular masses by viscosimetry, (iii) determination of a phase diagram, (iv) measurement of thermodynamical quantities by conductivity, (v) heat capacity measurements etc.
Organization : 1 week of laboratory work
20 hours theoretical lectures (each lecture lasts 90 minutes) during the second quadrimester
Written notes : Partial lecture notes and copies of slides are available.
Assessment : The laboratory work is assessed based on the quality of the experimental work, of the written report and of the oral presentation.

The theoretical competences are assessed during an oral examination.
