Course contents : Definition and specificity of an interface with regard to the volume . Concept of the "Gibbs dividing plane". Definition and meaning of the thermodynamical functions which characterize the interface ( surface excess energy , enthalpy , entropy , free enthalpy) . Definition and applications of interfacial and surface tensions . Detailed study of the main four equations which form the basis of interface physicochemistry . Equation of Young-Laplace and capillary phenomena .Equation of Kelvin and problems related to the formation of a new phase , nucleation theory . Equation of Young-Dupré ; contact angle , wetting , adhesion and cohesion . Discussion of the Gibbs adsorption isotherms , monomolecular films of Gibbs and oriented Langmuir-Blodgett films . Kinetics and thermodynamics of adsorption on solids and liquids . Detailed study of the main methods of surface analysis and characterization ( Auger , X.P.S (E.S.C.A.) , Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry , Ion Scattering Spectrometry , Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and related techniques... ) .
Course objective : Introduce the basis of interface physicochemistry and teach the main surface specific techniques enabling to characterize surfaces with regard to structure and chemical composition .
Prerequisites : Basic knowledge of thermodynamics applied to the volume of materials and reversible processes . Good background in physics and elementary notions in solid state physics .
Organization : The course starts in the beginning of February ( every Wednesday 10H30 - 12 H )
