The 7 remaining hours are devoted to the presentation of the main families of Angiosperms (flowering plants) of importance for veterinary surgeons. Practical coursesinclude the presentation of representative types of land plants and introduce the organography of vasvular plants. Major point are the practice of determination with a flora and recognition of the main toxic plants relevant for the veterinary surgeons in our regions.
| | | |
| Course objective :
| The aim of this course is to present the aspects of the plant world which cannot be ignored because of their scientific or economic interest, with an emphasis on plants (mainly higher plants) important for the veterinary surgeon: plants used in catle feeding or pharmacologically active (responsible of poisoning or source of drugs). | |
| | | |
| Prerequisites :
| No object (first university year). | |
| | | |
| Workshops :
| Practical courses start with the presentation of various types of land plants with emphasis on the structure of flowers (two sessions) and fruits (one session). Three other sessions are devoted to the practice of determination with a flora. During those sessions, visit in small groups of the greenhouses and the garden of medicinal and toxic plants give a contact with a maximum of useful or toxic plants. Those courses are hold in the room of botany practical courses of the old botanical institute (circular hall near Courtois street, Fusch street, 3, between the Guillemins station and St Gilles street), presently "maison Liégeoise de l'Environnement (MLE)". Schedule is communicated as soon as possible after the beginning of the academic year. For registration, at the first session at the latest, bring 2,5 Euros and a photograph. Advises for acquisition of necessary equipment for drawing and a hand lens will be given at the first session. An herbarium of 30 plants, including at least 5 grasses, to be presented at the practical examination, has to be prepared, If the standard international dimension for herbarium sheets (43x26 cm) is advisable for those who intend to continue this activity, any dimension superior or equal to A4 is admissible. For a limited number of students who would organise it (for example via the Student Union) teachers could take part in a field trip devoted to the flora of schistous and limestone areas. | |
| | | |
| Organization :
| A first session will take place as soon as possible after the beginning of the academic year, so that the personnal work of the herbarium preparation can proceed quickly. Slides being essential for the understanding of the course, presence is very important, independently of any reglementary obligation. Questions are welcome but given the limited number of hours of the course they should be limited to clarifications and supplementary information should be requested after the lecture. An optional session for revision can be organised at the end of the year. For that session it would be advisable to prepare written questions. | |
| | | |
| Written notes :
| Reference book: acquisition of the Nouvelle flore de laBelgique, du G.-D. de Luxembourg, du Nord de la France et des régions voisines, cinquième édition, 2004, par J. Lambinon et al. is necessary (40 Euros in case of grouped buying). J. Lambinon, Elements d'organographie des Angiospermes, 1969 (3 Euros) is useful and can be bought during practical courses. Partial notes (in course of development) will be distributed or be available via the Sudent Union. Botanical books can be presented for those interested by additional information but are not necessary for understanding the course.
A web-site devoted to toxic plants is developed in collaboration with the toxicology unit of the Faculty and should be soon accessible to students.
| | | |
| Assessment :
| The final note takes into account the mean of cotations of the laboratory reports of the year, the cotation of the herbarium, the cotation of the practical examination and the cotation of the theoretical examination, which counts for the half of the total. Theoretical examination is written, of the multiple choice type. Independently of regular notes reports, notes of the practical and theoretical examinations can be reported independently. | |
| | | |
| Contacts :
| During practical courses, at the old botanical institute in the city, 3, Fusch street, the other days at the Botanical Institute in Sart Tilman (B.22, P.70). Prof. V.
