BOTA0207-1

Biodiversity of higher plants and phytogeography

Duration :30h Th, 25h Pr, 5d FW
Credits/ECTS :
1st "licence" biological sciences (biology of plants)6
Holder(s) :Emmanuel Sérusiaux
Course contents : Three main sections can be recognized in the course:
(1) "Phytogeography": presentation of plant biodiversity, mainly from a chorological and biocenotic point of view, including the mechanisms which can explain it
(2) "Systematics": laboratory excercice on freshly collected material (angiosperms and bryophytes), with a special focus on angiosperms families phylogenetically important and those said to be difficult (Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Juncaceae, etc.)
(3) "Excursions": visit of the National Botanical Garden (Meise; 1 day) and excursion in the Vosges and Alsace
Course objective : Introduction to fundamental concepts of modern taxonomy and phylogeny, with practice on higher plants (from bryophytes to angiosperms) and to speciation mechanisms

Expertise on the characters of the most important families of angiosperms and their evolution; idem for the bryophytes (mosses and liverworts)

Expertise with the use of the Flora of Belgium

Survey of the most important vegetation types in our regions and expertise on description methods

Understanding the causes and mechanisms explaining the biodiversity, with a survey of most hypotheses (from the Red Queen theory to the Wallace line in S-E Asia)

And thus getting in touch with the stakes of biodiversity sustaining management
Prerequisites : Basic elements of angiosperms morphology, especially flowers and organs
Basic expertise on the Flora of Belgium
Understanding and fluent use of French
Workshops : Laboratory work on plant material and phylogeny excercise on computer. Field excursions
Organization : Indoor lectures with slides; laboratory exercices (Flora of Belgium, hand lens and equipment needed for plant dissection). Private cars and/or minibus for excursions.
Written notes : No complete syllabus, but numerous documents available (organography glossary, summaries, maps, figures, etc. — some of them in english). Documents will progressively be available on the Ulg Intranet.
Assessment : Written exam for the "phytogeography" section
Written exam and laboratory exercise for the "systematics" part, including morphological test on plant material and on use of the Flora of Belgium
