Duration :Partim végétal : 30h Th, 20h Pr
Partim animal : 30h Th, 20h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
2nd year of a Bachelor's degree in biological sciences8
Holder(s) :Partim végétal : Patrick Motte, Claire Périlleux
Partim animal : Jean‑Christophe Plumier, Marc Thiry
Course contents :

Partim végétal

The main aim of the lectures is to illustrate the uniqueness of the plant cell at different levels of organisation. Although basic biochemistry is conserved among eukaryotes, students should be able to understand the plastic response of plants at both cellular and molecular levels.

Partim animal

1. The epithelial tissues
2. Glandular epithelia
3. The connective tissues and the cartilage
4. Bone tissue
5. Muscles
6. Nervous tissue and blood
Course objective :

Partim végétal

In the first part of the course, a variety of topics will be discussed to emphasize the uniqueness of the plant cell : membrane, plastid organelle, vacuoles, endomembrane system, cytoskeleton and the cell wall. The functional aspects of the cellular compartments are highlighted : membrane transport, photosynthesis, cell-cell communication,...

The second part is devoted to the cell differenciation and histology with the description of some tissues.

In the last part, the cellular concepts explained in the previous chapters are used to describe the whole plant and the mineral nutrition, carbohydrate metabolism and long-distance transport.

Partim animal

The main aim are :
To study the relations between the cells structure and their functions
To give a general sketch of the wovens structure and of animals organs
To emphasize how the organisation of the wovens and organes confirm their functions
Prerequisites :

Partim animal

Basics notions in cell biology
Workshops :

Partim végétal

Practical courses are organized during 6 afternoons and will deal with :
- the plant cell
- photosynthesis
- mineral nutrition

Students are organized in two series.
Organization :

Partim végétal

The duration of one lecture is 1.5 h, and lectures are given during the second quadrimestre (monday and friday, from 10.30 to 12 AM) by P. Motte (1st and 2nd parts) and C. Périlleux (3rd part). Schedule will be sent out to all students.

Partim animal

The theoreticals courses are given in the first quadrimester on Monday at 9h until 11h , in the praticals works big room (first floor) in the Zoology institut (Buil. I1, Van Beneden qai 22 in Liège). Every theoreticals courses are followed in the same room by a praticals works session where the student examine differents histologicals preparations that illustrate the course.
Written notes :

Partim végétal

Lectures are given by using laptop and presentation software which allow a wide distribution of the diaporamas.

Assessment :

Partim végétal

Examination details will be defined at the beginning of the academic year. A single examination will be organized for both teachers.

Partim animal

Oral exam composed of the identification of two histological preparations and one theorical question.
