| | | |
| Course contents :
| The biological effects of physical parameters (temperature, pressure, ... ), as well as of chemical parameters (salinity, pollutants, ...) are considered from an integrative point of view.
A selection of topics has been done to fit in a 15 h course. They can be adapted according to students's request.
The cellular and molecular aspects of the living processes which are involved in reactions resulting from physical and chemical parameters together whith specific organismic aspects are considered in depth.
The practical part of the course deals with a program of laboratory experiments on:
-the effects of environmental factors (salinity, temperature, pollutants, ...) on the filtration activity of mussels.
-the effects of the same factors on the respiration of decapod crustaceans (crayfish, green crab, chinese crab, ...)
-the electrical properties of perfused preparations of isolated crab gills.
| | | |
| Course objective :
| The aim of the course is to consider selected aspects of the effects of environmental factors on the activity of various physiological processes in animals. | |
| | | |
| Prerequisites :
| A good training and basic knowledges in cellular and organismic animal physiology as well as in ecology are requested. | |
| | | |
| Organization :
| Interactive seminars - laboratory experiments.
For a part of the course, students have to prepare a personal work based on a literature research on a topic they have choosen (biological effects of acids rains - Antarctic fish - marine mammals - life in deserts - biological effects of temperature - ...).
Examples of interactive seminars:
A. Ecophysiology of osmoregulation in Crustacea.
B. Biological effects of hydrostatic pressure.
| | | |
| Written notes :
| Selected reprints and scientific review papers are offered to the students. | |
| | | |
| Assessment :
| Attendance at the course is obligatory.
Oral as well as written exams.
Evaluation of the oral communication quality.
Reports on experiments and written version of personal research.
