| Course contents :
| The course focuses on the historical anthropology of sub-Saharan Africa. For long, Africa has been presented as a continent without history, a derogatory conception that was enhanced by the anthropological present illusion of tribes living on the edge of history. The genealogy of this paradigm will be tackled first, from Antiquity to the present. Then an outline of 4000 years of history will be presented (from Ancient Egypt to decolonisation), with a special interest for the networks (commercial, political, etc.) that have shaped these societies. Ethnicity, a very complex phenomenon, will be the central point of the longest part of the course. Another central point will be the anthropology of modernity and tradition (both reinvented in modern Africa) and of the sort-it-yourself economy now at the heart of the life of millions of urbanites, in Congo and elsewhere. | |

| Course objective :
| One of the aims is to give an encyclopedical and empirical overview of sub-Saharan African societies, past and present, through many examples chosen in various contexts (from South, Central, and Western Africa). The second one is to provide a critical approach of the concepts that are currently used to describe culture and history in Africa. | |
