| Course contents :
| The course starts by presenting the consequences of various aggressions on cells and tissues: cellular death by necrosis or apoptosis, tissular necrosis, phenomena of cellular and tissular adaptation (in particular overloading). Then, the focus moves on to the reactions of the organism: inflammation, immunity, reparation, cicatrization. Some of these reactions, namely the immunitary responses, may lead to the development of lesions: these are cases of hypersensitivity and their importance is shown in the reactions to infectious agents (tuberculosis) in the rejection of grafts in auto-immune conditions. Vascular diseases which affect the blood flow create serious disorders and are the first cause of mortality in Western societies. The following conditions are studied: atherosclerosis, formation of thromboses, embolisms, and infarcts. The study of benign or malignant tumors includes their morphological characteristics as well as their causes and pathogenesis. The study of biological effects of radiations is included in the Radiobiologie-Radioprotection (Radiology-Radioprotection) course of the 5th semester (3rd candidature en médecine) | |

| Course objective :
| Pathology is the study of diseases. The course describes the lesions produced by various aggressions on cells, tissues, and organs, as well as the reactions of the organism to these aggressions. Moreover, the course defines the manner in which aggressions provoke the formation of lesions (pathogenesis).
This course complements the Pathological biochemistry course and is the basis of the understanding of diseases. It defines their causes, their formation modes and the induced anatomical lesions, therefore introducing the analysis of consequences of aggressions on the functioning of organs (Physiopathology) and their clinical expression as diseases (medical and surgical pathologies).

| Prerequisites :
| The courses taught during the 3rd semester (especially histology) is indispensable. | |
| | | |
| Workshops :
| Three parts are organized into: - a two-hour session in the practical exercises room (Tour de Pathologie du CHU, level -1) for groups of 30 students after a preparatory session with Docteur Ph Delvenne; - the groups contain approx. 30 students; - presence is mandatory. No specific materials are required, apart from a photograph. Desktops with CD-ROM drives are available in practical exercises room. They contain course notes and multiple-choice questions. - Web site: the following Web site features the illustrated comments on the practical sessions, as well as course descriptions and a list of exam questions : http://www.anapatho.ulg.ac.be/ | |
| | | |
| Organization :
| Transversal course taught during the 4th semester.
Professeur Ph. DELVENNE takes part in some lectures.
The practical details (location, schedule, etc) are not yet available.
| | | |
| Written notes :
| BASIC PATHOLOGY by Kumar, Cotran and Robins (7th edition, Saunders Ed., 2003): a remarkable course support; it also contains materials on Special anatomy, which will be studied during the 1st and 2nd doctorats.
- ROBBINS-PATHOLOGIC BASIS OF DISEASES by Cotran,Kumar and Collins (6th edition, Saunders Ed., 1999): remarkable course support and reference, it is more complete than BASIC PATHOLOGY. It will be useful after the completion of the degree. If this book is bought, it is not necessary to buy BASIC PATHOLOGY) - Anatomie Pathologique générale et Spéciale by A. Stevens et J. Lowe, De Boeck Université, 1997 - an interesting CD-ROM: PATHOLOGY by A. Stevens et J. Lowe, published by Mosby, - Web site: the following Web site features the illustrated comments on the practical sessions, as well as course descriptions and a list of exam questions : http://www.anapatho.ulg.ac.be/
| | | |
| Assessment :
| Written exam in June with open short-answer questions, multiple choice questions with general implicit solutions and certainty levels.
Practical Exercises: individual examination with Dr. Ph. Delvenne, during morphological practical exercises.
Also, the student can be interrogated on general pathological anatomy during the multidisciplinary oral exam.
| | | |
| Contacts :
| Contact with M. J. BONIVER: after the lectures or on appointment (if required).
Secretary: Melle M. BASIGLINI, in charge of administrative issues. Address: Anatomie Pathologique, Tour de Pathologie (1st floor), Sart Tilman Telephone: 04/366.24.10.
