AERO0014-1

Aeronautic and Space Propulsion

Duration :30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
4th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in electromechanics (aerospace)5
Holder(s) :Olivier Léonard
Course contents :
  • Action, reaction, propulsion. Historical perspectives and classification of propulsive systems.
  • Compressible flows : thermodynamic losses, Fanno and Rayleigh problems, thrust developed by an engine.
  • Caracterization of the main components : intakes, compressors, turbines, fans, combustors, nozzles, propellers.
  • Jet engines : nominal performances, off-design performances, transients, turbine cooling.
  • Rocket engines : performances, nozzle sizing, thermochemistry of the combustion chamber, chemical reactions in the nozzle, selection of the propergols.
Course objective : The objectives of this course are
  • to understand how a propulsion system is conceived according to its mission, to the technological limits and to the operating conditions,
  • to understand what influences its peformances and how they can be determined.
Prerequisites : Thermodynamics, Heat Transfers and Fluid Mechanics
Workshops :
  • Projects are organized by groups of two students. They consist in carrying out a preliminary draft of turbojet that must achieve required performances.
  • A laboratory session is organized in order to test a small turbojet, to acquire and to analyse measurements of pressure, temperature, rotational speed, thrust and flow rates.
Organization : This course is organized throughout the second half of the academic year, by 4 hour sessions, at a rate of about 30 hours of theory and 15 hours of exercises.
Written notes : Course notes are available, as well as a collection of solved exercises. These notes are regularly updated and are distributed during the course. Reference books are proposed. The slides are in English.
Assessment : An oral examination on the theory is organized in June (1st session) and September (2nd session). The project is subject to a report which is also evaluated.
