VETE0067-2

General bacteriology applied to veterinary medicine

Duration :26h Th, 15h Pr, 3h TD
Credits/ECTS :
3rd "candidature" in veterinary medicine4
Holder(s) :Jacques Mainil
Course contents : The course is subdivided into three parts:
- general bacteriology with the purpose of presenting (briefly) the properties of all bacteria: cellular architecture, metabolism, cell division and growth;
- systematic bacteriology with the purpose of describing all bacteria important in animal disease and food microbiology;
- virulence bacteriology with the purpose of explaining where the bacteria live, how some of them cause disease, which antimicrobials can be used in treatment and/or prophylaxis of diseases, and which procedure(s) can be followed in desinfection and control of pathogenic bacteria.
Course objective : Explaining to the students how pathogenic bacteria live, how they interact with animals (and humans), why they are important in public health and food microbiology, and how they, as future vets, can fight against them. Also familiarising the students with the diagnostic procedure(s) of the bacteriological laboratories, they will quite often contact during their future professional life.
Prerequisites : Knowledge in cytology of eucaryotic cells, molecular genetics and biochemistry.
Workshops : The practicals will familiarise the students with the procedure(s) followed in a routine diagnostic bacteriological , laboratory: sampling, inoculation of growth media, identification procedure, antibiotic sensitivity, writing of a response to the practitioner.
Organization : 26 hours of lectures
15 hours of practicals
3 hours of seminars
Written notes : (i) Student notes Fully available on the website of the Faculty starting from 2004-2005.

(ii) Recommended books (available in the Library of the Faculty) :

Assessment : In 2004-2005 the evaluation of the students will be as follows:
- during the practicals: practicals + systematics.
- during the session: theory with a multiple choice questionnary (50 questions)
NB: practicals 20/80; systematics 10/80; multiple choice 50/80
