| Course contents :
| This course provides the essential basis for the measurement and analysis of population structure and movement, aiming, thanks to familiarisation with its main instruments, to deal with demographic phenomena, their causes and economic and social consequences. | |
| | | |
| Course objective :
| The course deals with the various problems raised by population trends, mainly in developed countries, and which are likely to interest both economists and sociologists. The first part presents techniques and methods for analysing population structures and movements : marriage rate, birth and death rates as wel as socio-economic determinants for these demographic phenomena. The second part deals with population trends from the pre-industrial age up to the present demographic situation in Belgium and other Western countries. This analysis is followed up by long-term population forecasts. The relationship between population and economic growth is also examined. The third part concentrates on certain economic aspects of demaographic trends, chiefly the effect of population aging on labour supply, employment, consumption ans welfare payments (pensions, health,...) The last part deals with the economic effects of international migrations : foreign labour, integration and discrimination. | |
